Video games, computer games, interactive entertainment have been around for a long time and during the 1980s video games had the same vibe regardless of which country they were developed in. I am talking about a time when Space Invaders, Pac Man and Mario brothers were all developed for the arcades contained the same essence. Of course their genres were distinct in their own way, but the games were all about obtaining that high score, leaving you with no coins for the bus, yes kids! There was a time when coins were used for video games as well as getting a can of soft drink from a vending machine.
Over the past few years games of today have evolved so much when compared to their ancestors, and with this evolution you can start differentiating them, to the point that you start can tell which country they originated from. I would like to call this, their "Hometown". I believe that games we see today can be categorized into three hometowns, we have games originating from Europe, Japan and North America, and each of these region have game designs corresponding to what I have classified into three types,"Chaotic", "Grind" and "Cater", of course there will be certain games that are an exception to these classifications and certain game genres can fall into two or all the categories, but rest assured if you look at games overall and link them to their origin, you will start noticing they fall into certain hometowns. In no way am I suggesting that a certain games coming from a certain hometown make better games, I am just simply pointing out the distinction between them, perhaps the game designs itself is influenced by the culture from their hometown.
In the next few blogs I will cover the three mentioned hometowns of games, and what the three classification represent and mean. Perhaps we may delve into some of the cultural aspect of why the games made from certain hometowns turn out they way they are.
